The Station

I’ve been getting a lot of emails from coaching clients and friends that all sound the same — “When this happens I’ll be able to …. when that happens I’ll….”
I can remember being like that. Always looking forward. When..When..When…Rachel gave me this poem shortly after we had started dating. 12 years later it still hangs [...]

Day 297 (day 3 / week 42)

Today was a workday. I’m exhausted. I still have a TON of homework to do by Wednesday. That’s going to take a miracle, because it’s time consuming and I don’t have much time.
I did my stairs thing, and wore my pedometer. It said I took 10,475 steps today. Just a little over 5 miles. Sweet.

The Potassium Deficiency Myth

Sports drink promoters have convinced many athletes that they need special drinks to replace potassium during exercise. A recent study of female soccer players confirms that this is a myth (International Journal of Sports Medicine, June 2009). Stop Doing Conventional Squats.

That’s right. One [...]

You may have heard by now that the average person has 25,000 mornings on average. Every time I think about that it makes me want to run to action and do something to make my day all it can be.
If I only have 25,000 mornings do you think I am going to waste [...]

Metabolic Syndrome and Diabetes

As the standard of living in a country increases, so does the incidence of Metabolic Syndrome. Today, one of three North Americans will suffer premature death from the consequences of Metabolic Syndrome, which is caused too little activity and too much food (The Journal of Clinical Hypertension, September 2009). Day 293 (day 6 / week 41)

Today has been a very exhausting day, which can be easily described with these few pictures:

I spent most of the day playing catch-up. It happened in a 10 minute period when I stopped off to Office Depot before attempting to drop off mail at my mom’s house, to pick up some supplies for [...]

Preventing Muscle Cramps

Most older textbooks explain that muscle cramps are caused by lack of water (dehydration) and lack of salt. However, studies on endurance athletes show that athletes who cramp do not have less body water or sodium than those who do not cramp (British Journal of Sports Medicine, June 2009). So the current explanation for muscle [...]
